I’m currently working as a summer vacation scholar for the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics (RSAA) at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra. We live on the ANU campus, but travel up the mountain everyday for work. It’s a very beautiful place to live and work. I took this image from the top of the Black Mountain Tower (also known as the Telstra Tower).

The buildings to the left, on the lower part of the mountain are part of the local waterworks, they’re not a part of the observatory. The big white dome you can see is that of the 74” reflector. The buildings to the left of this dome include the buildings where the astronomers work, including the Commonwealth Solar Observatory building (they yellowish building, though I think it is hard to see the colour in this image). The smaller dome that is partially hidden by trees is the 30” Reynolds Reflector. There is also a cluster of telescopes located to the right of the 74” dome. These are owned and operated by Electo Optics Systems (EOS). Most of the trees on the mountain are quite young due to the big bushfires of 2003. Most of the telescopes were destroyed in the fires so most of the domes aren’t currently being used for astronomy.

The image is a panoramic made of twelve individual images, stitched together using AutoStitch. I used a Canon 500D with a 55-200mm lens.

nice! I have some pics of the McDonald Observatory in West Texas. I'll see if I can find them to post.
It must be nice to work in a place like that. I have applied many times here, but there are hundreds of people trying to get in.
