Orion Nebula 25-03-2009 by Chrissyo Orion Nebula 25-03-2009 by Chrissyo
No, you’re not seeing things – I’ve just uploaded my first “ proper ” deep sky image! =P

I’ve been playing around with our Canon 400D over the last few weeks doing some star trail images and general widefield stuff. I’ve recently managed to rig up a way to attach the camera to my EQ6 tracking mount so I can take images without trailing.

So tonight I went out with the EQ6 and 400D with the intent to capture a widefield image of the asteroid 2 Pallas just below the Orion nebula. I saw that I was getting some decent images of the nebula (as well as 2 Pallas – an animation should come in a few days time if all goes well ;)). So I decided to try some 30 sec exposures with the 200mm lens. This is the result. It’s no where near as great as what some of the other users around here are doing, but it’s a start. =P

I captured 29 30 second exposures at ISO 1600 with a 55-200mm Canon lens at 200m. I took some dark frames, but never ended up using them (as such, you can see some little squigglies from some hot pixels here and there) in the processing – I just stuck the 29 frames into Registax5 (I downloaded Iris earlier this evening but haven’t yet had time to play with it). I resized the final image down in Photoshop, did some minor adjustments (the core of the nebula was a bit overexposed, so I took a selection around it, feathered it then reduced its brightness a tad) and played with the brightness/contrast a tad. I’m not sure how it will look on everyone else’s monitor – I originally threw this together as a desktop wallpaper for my computer so I just played with it until I liked what I saw.

Couldn't you have attached your camera via piggyback onto your telescope and therefore on the mount?

I don't have a piggyback mount on my telescope, so I just had the camera attached to the mount by itself. It was a bit of overkill, having a 400D alone on an EQ6, but it seemed to work alright. =P

Must be a decent zoom lens you've got because that's pretty sharp. Very clear and diffined nebula.

Cheers.

Very nicely done! I've been waiting to see one of these from you and was wondering how long it would take for you to point a camera past the solar system. :D
